Default Anti-Virus Software

Do we need to get any anti-virus/firewall software for the X1?

I've yet to hear about anybody ever getting a real virus on a wm device

normal pc virus's dont work at all so the virus have to be especially written for wm to work
so far the few that exist because of the still rather small wm internet presense
is imho more proof of concepts then real virus's

if wm get more mobile internet market shares maybe that will change

Getting a virus is close to impossible, although installing an anti-virus on the Xperia will be hardly noticeable due to the high amount of RAM.

I might give it a try actually...

Sure there is lots of RAM, but if the AV program scans every file before it is accessed it will slow your device. Really not worth it IMO.

There are not really any viruses for WM for the same reason there arent any for Mac OS, iphones, linux, uiq ect. Why waste your time on a small audience when there are soo many potential targets for windows desktops?

Yeah, I know.

Nevertheless I still feel curiosity to give it a try for the sake of it, more of a "want to see" experience since I can't really imagine anyone paying for an anti-virus for PPC hence the app itself has to be pretty crappy.

I think the reason they make them is mainly for corporate sales. Companies with security policies that require pda users to have antivirus on the pda just in case. So perhaps there are some good ones out there. I never really looked into it. Symantec/norton might make one. I think I heard of a big AV company that had a PDA client.

I used to run Airscanner Mobile Security back in the day on my HP iPAQ 4700 more for the novelty I guess than because of the threat of viruses. I know I did not answer your question about whether you need to run something but if you were also looking for something to use, I found that bit of software very stable. I did not run it in the background however (can't remember if there was an option or not), but the on demand scanning was quick enough in my opinion.

I put Kaspersky Mobile on mine. It hasn't caught anything yet (I didn't really expect it to), but it also doesn't slow it down any and seems worth the peace of mind.

A one year license is pretty pricey online, but I found it dirt cheap in a brick and mortar.
