Default iPhone 3G with GPS - $199

WWDC just ended and announced the new iPhone 3G coming out on July 11 in 22 countries (soon to 62 countries):

8GB for $199
16GB for $299

What do you all think?

Has to be a 2yr contract price right? Cuz if not i would seriously buy one (8gb) just to dick around with.

But...
-no (still???) mms
-no camera flash
-no video recording
-no a2dp
-PLASTIC back now? why?
A lot of these should've been minor upgrades for the new version. Maybe they are working on a mid-year refresh.

People shouldn't whine about no video calling - AT&T isn't even mature enough for that let alone the iphone (one-way video???).

Still gonna decide between the HTouch Pro and the X1 myself I thinks.

it has a plastic back for better gps signal.

it's quite a package for $200.

It'd be hard to justify $700 on a Samsung i900, $500 on a HTC Touch Pro, $800+ on an X1, etc.

I love the X1, but I'm bracing myself for the price.

yea i hear ya on the price. I wonder if the iphones aggressive pricing will help bring down the expected costs for the new crop of WM phones.

The 3G iPhone is tempting at its price point. In all honesty I would get rid of my iPods, but then have to carry a camera. Also the screen size means GPS will be decent in real life usage. My N95 has not been the all in one convergence device I hoped it would be due to DRM music I have.

I honestly hate an all in one device concept.

Only because I hate the fact that "if you lose one, you lose all" what I mean by that is the battery life, I'm not going to waste my battery life on music or video when I got phone calls to make. I don't want to use a 5mp video/camera with flash and end up with a finished battery by the end of the party.

I'd rather have a separate device for each of my wants, I have a sony digital cam, a zune80 and a blackjack 2 (got it today).

Even with the Xperia that really won't change, and I don't recommend having a all in one either because no device will do it all perfectly, for example, the iphone uses A-GPS, meaning when you go outside your home city, your pretty much screwed, you can't use the gps (you can, but your on data roaming, that's the worst kind ). I would rather have a separate gps device that doesnt get tied down by anything.

But the all in one has it's advantages too! you carry one device instead of 10, but I have tolarence for that.

I think SE might have some issues considering the environment they're going to release the X1 into. With the Touch Diamond, Touch Pro, and now the iPhone 3G, they've got some decent competition. Most reviews I've read about the Touch Diamond say that their TouchFLO 3D is quite good. Of course, the Apple interface is good too. So now SE needs to deliver a device that will surpass all these others in such a way, that people will pay a price premium for it. After all, most of the devices accomplish the same functions more or less.

I am really happy about the price they're selling the new iPhone for. You really can't beat that if you're looking for a smart device, and hopefully it will drive more competition among SE, HTC, and the like.

What do you think the X1 developers and marketing people are saying about this?

Did you know that when you buy an iphone (current- gen), the two year contract forces you to put money down a month for a data plan whether you like it or not, and Apple's website even says that prices start at $59.99/mo (that's for only 450 minutes...and will ultimately skyrocket from there). 450 minutes is not enough for me (and many others im assuming) so let's upgrade to 900 minutes for 79.99/mo. Let's do the math shall we? 79.99x24 months= $1919.76 +199 or 299 for cost of the iPhone= 2118.76 or 2218.76 over 2 years (not including taxes and fees and keep in mind, you only get 200 sms no matter which plan you choose so more sms' means extra every month) The 3G iphone will be even worse as the 3G data plans can be as mush as $45 extra on top of voice and messaging per month! So the iphone isn't as cheap as people think. Not to mention the feature set isn't all that groundbreaking.

Just to clarify, the 1st gen iPhone data plan (unlimited) is extra $20/month on top of voice plan. The iPhone 2.0 data plan (still unlimited) is $30/month on top of voice plan.
