Default My thoughts about the XPERIA

I'm mainly writing this so I don't have to do my Biology dissertation about Statins but thats another story.
I remember way back at the beginning of this year when SE announced the XPERIA, people moaned about WinMo being the OS. I had a PDA, it was fairly useless but I had one none the less and wasn't too impressed with it. I now understand why people were moaning about WinMo.

I think its worthy at this this point to mention that I've owned SE's all my life and they are always renowned for the ease of navigation, the software (or firmware? I've lost roots with the technical terms) were always top notch. I was excited about the X1 for months and months and months and then it came out. It frustrates me, its been 3 days but It's not getting any more familiar, and I have began to develop a deep sense of loathing for it. I HATE WINMO pretty much sums it up. I hope to god SE will develop a panel with a good old familiar sony ericsson feel. When you want to get to somewhere in WinMo, it takes you on a long, windy waywardy route. And the way it handles SMS/MMS in particular frustrate me.

The build quality of the phone is exceptional, I haven't seen anything like it. From the camera to the SIM card "holder" its all high qual. The OS, however its stopping this phone from being perfect. It doesnt FEEL like a sony ericsson inside...

Ah the frustration...

Can you give examples about things that frustrate you?

That's WinMo in a nutshell but once you have the spb panel and some shortcuts etc, it's great. I never need the stylus, you can use the ok hard button to close apps rather than trying to press the small x in the top corner etc. I think it's a great phone and with a few tweaks, you hardly see WinMo and have it running exactly how you want.

The fact that it's "like no other" SE phone is exactly the point. Even the branding is discrete. This is not your standard SE phone but a workhorse of a business phone or a media player or a great on the go web browser or gps etc.

It's a nice idea to have a SE panel that makes it feel like a standard phone but honsetly most people have bought this for it's features and accept it's WinMo, they didn't buy it to have another standard SE phone.

That's my opinion anyway.

What I would like to see is an extension of the panels whereby you can select a default panel for when the phone starts up. It's early days yet though and there's a generally good vibe out there for the phone and I believe it's gaining real momentum in developer circles and we should start to see soem great apps and panels to further enhance it. Hopefully the Xperia brand grows and we'll have a nice WM7 X2 before you know it

There is a new learning curve for every OS there is out there, and this is no different for Windows Mobile. You have to be prepared to ditch everything you have learnt so far about other OS, and go in with an open mind.

Tell us what frustrations that you are having, and we can all pitch in to help out.

If you start comparing with this or that phone that you've used before, you will never get anywhere, and will not learn anything new.

In fact the only thing to ***** about at WinMo is UI looking pretty ugly and basic deep inside.
But after over 3 years of using different smartphones, the only thing which matters is reliability and stability.
I'm planning to get a X1 but before, I observe carefully this forum to find out about any possible problems...

I agree. While the UI is not great out of the box, you can change all that. Its the power of the OS that counts. So let us know what bothers you about the OS, and we can help show you how to improve your UI.

+1 The X1 is great with some tweaks. The power in it is great. To quote William David Thoreau’s: “What lies before us, and what lies beyond us, is tiny compared to what lies within us.”

I think the x1 is a great and powerful phone and we've not seen hardly anything yet.

Yeah, its getting a bit better. When I first got it I aligned the screen with my finger, then I did it again with my stylus and its a lot more responsive. Got SPB shell but to be honest I use the top left panel most of the time. I got icontact to make managing contacts more easy.

I hate the way it handles text messages. Anyway to change this?

You mean you dont like viewing them in a threaded fashion? I think there may be a hack to disable this. Is that what you want? You just want to see one message at a time?
