In the Uk we have pay-as-you-go sim cards, you buy credit to top it up but you don't actually need to top it up to recieve calls, do you not have that in the US?

Just thought it may be a way around the data plan problem.

However if I'm honest, if you are not going to use it as a phone there are plenty of other products out there that woiuld suit you better, you are basically after a personal organiser with mp3 and camera functionality.

You can use a WLAN to access the Internet functions on your X1. That way you don't need to pay for your data, only your calls.

- you can use wlan for data but the range is very limited (weak antenna)
- you can connect to the internet if you connect your X1 to your laptop (you'll have internet if the laptop has internet)

- i don't think you should get the X1 without a plan, because its waaay cheaper to get a nice PDA and a cheap (small) phone for SMS/mobile.

I'm currently using the X1 without a SIM until my new SIM card arrives (I switched carriers, but am keeping my number, so that will take about 2 weeks).
I can tell you this: Wifi on such a small device is NOT good. My laptop (Thinkpad T61) connects without problems if the signal is weak, but the X! always tells you the signal is too weak.

Really? That sucks. I've never had Wifi on my phone before, so this is one of the things I was really looking forward to. I mean, it would be fine if I was at, say, a restaurant with wifi, right? It's just when you get far away?

What are you saying man!?

It doesn't have that bad WLAN reception. I've never had any problems and it's better than my old FujitsuSiemens AMILO Pro V2010! I have two routers and I can see a difference in signal strengh. With a good (read the right) router/access point you get good reception.
Look here too: better wifi?

Ditto, in my apartment I'm never more than about 5-10 metres from my wireless router but the signal on the X1 normally only states about 2 bars. However, wireless is good and fast and I've never lost connection.

Well, I have a HTC Touch Diamond, and I would be surprised if the X1 can't perform as good as, or better, than it. I have no problem with wifi range anywhere in, or around, my house within 60 meters....
