As an operating system. Is it possible? With what? I realise that the handset is new, so there won't have been many devs who have had their hands on it, so I appreciate its a little early to say, however, I wanted to start a thread for ideas and / or future OS. PLEASE don't use too many technical terms as I won't understand them.....

You can easily replace a OS on a mobile. The OS that you are going to install (the new one) just has to be compatible and if it's not then people usually figure out a way eventualy. I don't think Symbian would ever work on the XPERIA because I don't think the XPERIA has the right type of hardware for Symbian. Android might be a possibility.

Yea I've been through palm and symbian, WM is certainly the best. Android is just wishful thinking, I don't think it will get much attention from anyone but people who are into open source developing, and the casual users who like the touchscreen and interface.

I was a Palm fan before Windows Mobile. I really hope MS pulls through with WM7. WM is very powerful and very customizable, but it needs to have a much better experience out of the box. And so much of the UI is stuck in the 90's. For instance, connecting to wireless networks and the uninstall program dialog.

If WM will come to a point where only fingers and a keyboard are necessary (and maybe some function buttons) - that will be a true advantage to other mobile OS. Some time ago, I read an article about SE problems at first introducing the panels concept to MS and their initial reluctance to support this different approach of handling (I think the link to this aricle was posted a few days ago). This clearly shows that MS does still think of WM as a lesser little brother to the PC Windows instead of a different OS for different purposes.
