The link in engadget story was to smape.com and that review was pretty extensive - but made me feel right about waiting http://smape.com/en/reviews//Sony_Er...A_X1-prev.html

The Smape review has been posted for a while already, it's not new. But it is good to find a review that seems educated AND positive about the X1, as opposed to some of the crass stuff out there. Can you believe I got told off by people for saying "this phone's not necessarily going to cost 600 quid, we should wait for a more official word", Jesus Christ.

| Supposedly TouchFlo 3D lags too. You can't have your cake and eat it I guess. I really hope it comes out soon. I think I'm about to sign the dotted line with AT&T in the near future, and I don't want to lug around a lame-*** looking Tilt. If the X1 isn't coming for a few months I'll just sell whatever phone I just got on contract and buy a Touch Pro or Diamond.

The Diamond (and possibly the Dream?) have both popped up as viable alternatives for me, especially as the Diamond's price is already starting to drop in my current location. But I just have a gut feeling that I'll be happier with the X1 for web browsing. I don't even need a phone that much, but I need the "internet device" aspect of it. And of course the price tag will factor into my decision, because I could just get a netbook for my purposes for $300 less.

I think it's best to wait and try it for yourself. Countless people have expressed their dismay at the keypads of certain cell phones, but then when I try them out, I find them to be perfectly adequate and fairly easy to type on. I have also bought things on the strength of other people's opinion, and end up thoroughly disappointed. I had the iPod touch for a while. Contrary to popular opinion, I found it easier to type on than a hardware thumbboard -- at least I found it to be easier than a Sony Clie NX, which is my reference point. But also contrary to popular opinion, I don't think Mobile Safari is fast at all. It's a dog. And it's nothing special once you've seen, say, a video of Opera Mobile 9.5 Beta. If the X1keyboard really does feel like the keys of a Vaio U, that might be a problem, but I wouldn't be so quick to give weight to somebody else's opinion, because theirs may or may not match my own. To put it bluntly, I will not shed a single tear until I see the actual coffin (or the nail in it, hahahaha).
