Default Wm7

I really like the looks of the X1. It seems solid and has all the features one could want. I had been camparing it against the Touch Pro which it matches up pretty well against. My big question now will be to get the phone now or wait till the new year when WM7 will be released.

Do folks think this will be upgradable or there will be new devices that come out?

Judging on how they avoided the question in the recent webcast, I'd have to say no unfortunately. Still, though I haven't read the news on WM7, I'd say that most people wouldn't be getting the X1 for the software, since TouchFlo seems to trump Panels. Most people love the style and form factor of the X1 over other WM devices. So for me WM7 isn't a huge deal.

I agree. I have said it many times, but I really think the panels are a silly idea. When I get it I will change the panel key to be what it should be, the start menu (and when TouchXperience is released, that will be my start menu). I am not buying it for the se panel software, I am buying it because it is an awsome windows mobile handset. Great design, and great specs.

Well, the TouchFlo3D's kinda laggy, and some people disable to increase their battery life, which in a sense defeats the purpose of getting a HTC product. So in that case might as well get X1.

I would like give the X1 Panels a good run through to see what it is all about. That fact that they are live and interactive seems to make them more than just a set of thumbnails, but whether they are practical and maintain decent performance is something to be tested in real world use.

Another key thing to test would be switching between Panels and applications, and how fast it is, multitasking and background tasks.

One bad thing I noticed in this video:
http://www.theunwired.net/?item=vide...peria-x1-built
He is playing music with the multimedia panel, then he switches to another panel and the music stops! Not good! The concept doesn't make sense. What if I am playing music and want to check my today screen? And the radio. Why would I want the FM radio to become my home screen? It just doesn't make sense. Right now to play music I launch my media player app. I can minimize my media player app to go back to my today screen while my music keeps playing. Why would I want my media player to replace my home screen? Its just not a logical UI to me. Maybe it will work out well, and maybe they will allow background playback, but it still just doesn't make sense. The media panel is very cool, but I wish it wasnt a panel. Why can't it just be another app? Same for the FM radio. I want to use the radio, but I dont want the radio to replace my today screen.

I'm not saying I cant open a media player application. You can always do that. I'm saying that the only way to use Sony Ericsson's nice media browser is to switch to that panel. Which is annoying because now if I want to go back to my today screen the music will stop when I switch panels. Maybe they will fix it to allow background playback, but this is just an example of why I think the UI does not make sense. Why should a media player become my home screen. It should be like everything else, an application that runs on top of the home screen.

i think we are all jumping on a bandwagon that hasn't even been made yet.

Personally I like the idea of the panels esp since they are customisable, they are meant to represent what you mostly do with the phone and hence have a UI tailored to your own needs that has the potential to be really funky, downloading UI made by other people with the stuff you are in to.

With the panels that we have seen already, these are still preproduction models that includes both hardware and software, we do not know what level of customisation each panel has, it may be that there is an option to have it playing when another panel is showing I don't know, remember they are only showed the panels to give us an idea of the functionality, they may not be finished.

Plus I am pretty sure that since SE is really hedging their bets on this (profits were down 97% last quater after all) I think they will respond quickly to the users gripes. I cannot see it being a major problem to have the panel still playing music in the background as they are all meant to be active at any one time, this is something they keep telling us, they are all active yet if you look at the good old fish panel they are never active until it has been open, not one of the dozen or so videos I have seen of them have they been moving before the app was open in fact once open they change starting position!

So i reckon it is still works in process, the panels are important but are minor in the scheme of things since they can be downloaded and updated easily.
