I don't know if this was said already but Arne Hess at unwired already took a look at the close-to- production X1 from O2 and confirmed there was no accelerometer which means no wm7 because some of the interface requires you to flick the phone in order to scroll and only an accelerometer can achieve this. Unless there are different versions of wm7 requiring different hardware, then I believe this means no wm7 for the x1... maybe the x2.

I think what n4v1n meant is that without an accelerometer in the X1, there will be little hope of it being UPGRADABLE to WM7, if and when SE decides to provide for the upgrade. My opinion - eventhough gestures and movement control is touted as a key feature in WM7, I would think that Microsoft would be prudent enough to produce a version that does not require this feature. But all signs indicate that a year from now, most major smartphone contenders will need to have one to compete add to the coolnest factor.

I highly doubt accelerometer is a requirement for WM7. Infact, supposedly one feature of WM7 will be to recognize movement such as a shake gesture using the camera, not an accelerometer. I am confident that the X1 will get WM7 one way or another..

My Impression was that the accelerometer only provides the ability to detect the orientation of the device i.e. whether the device is being held vertically/horizontally/at-an-angle etc. Only a few features of certain applications in wm7 that make use of that feature might not work. Example - Imaging application changing between landscape & portrait as per the orientation. But multi-touch features such as zomming in/out on an image using two fingure gestures, is completely software (i.e. OS) dependent. And not only that, I read somewhere that future windows mobile version (no sure 7 or 8) will detect environmental settings such as available Wi-Fi, bluetooth etc and start/stop applications automatically. So all in all, X1 shouldn't loose much of WM7 goodies 'cause of the missing accelerometer. Would love to hear more perspectives from other members ?

Yes what I meant was that the phone wouldn't be upgradeable to wm7. Anyways I just got back from a month long hiatus from this forum becuase i decided to buy an omnia. Don't get me wrong it's a great phone but when I saw the sept 30th release date, and johnny x, I've decided to put my omnia up on ebay. If anyone wants a crack at i, here ya go: Samsung SGH- i900 OMNIA 16GB Black +EXTRAS UNLOCKED I hope to sell this soon so I can get the X1!

If X1 cost around 800$US I will buy it. If it's more than 1000$US I may buy HTC Touch Pro instead. |
