Default QuickGPS tool?

I saw arne hess mention the QuickGPS tool that comes with the X1. I googled this and found out it was basically A-gps. HTC's site also said you can use it with activesync or wifi. How does this tool get you a quicker gps fix, if you are downloading information through activesync or wifi??

Could it be that you download the maps via wifi and not (for example) 3G?

All you have to do is download the application, then every 7 days, you need to renew the GPS Satellites positioning information in order to create a 3D triangulation faster. This can be downloaded through any data you have available, whether usb, wifi, 2G, 3G

It's just used to connect to the satellites faster.

I always thought that the GPS satellites follow a predictable geosynchronous orbit and remain fixed, that's the whole point so that we can do accurate triangulation of our current position on earth based on known fixed positions of satellites in space?

Unless you're telling me them GPS satellites are falling into earth every week or getting abducted by aliens

Well, Quick GPS just saves us time from having to calculate that everytime.

actually a-gps uses the phone masts, they also hold the geo satellites positions and relay that back to the phone, the phone triangulates itself with the masts first and then uses the data to find the correct sats faster, i think they have just updated the masts near my house in the last month or so as I can get a lock in under 30 seconds, it used to take a good 5 mins.

fast gps I have no idea about

Sorta off topic, but we need to pay a subscription to use GPS right?

Oh and, are we limited to using that tool? or can we get another GPS app?

No, no need for subscriptions (thankfully) The only thing you would need to pay for (one time fee) is the GPS software like tomtom or igo8. The only reason you would have to pay monthly for gps is if you A-gps which is GPS enhanced by data packets over your network to get a faster signal, which of course is subject to data charges. But if you just want to use GPS and don't mind waiting longer to get you positioning, then you need no subscription or monthly charge whatsoever. If you want you can skip using quickgps entirely to avoid any data charges, but your signal would take a little longer to acquire.

Hmm wait let me clear some things up for myself....

Ok I understand standard GPS is free.
And A-GPS requires a monthly fee in addition to data costs? or do you mean the data cost is the fee for using A-GPS.

Anyway, thanks, and sorry for hijacking the thread lol. Havent owned anything with GPS yet.
