Demos shows that when you select a panel, it loads up rather quickly. But it doesnt. The first thing that loads up is just an image of the panel. Try look for the one where they chose the big clock. The first thing that pops up shows a fixed time and calendar event involving a dinner. about 2-3 seconds later the ACTUAL panel starts running. It looks like a quick load, but the image hides the actual loading. Its disappointingly laggy, but thats maybe cause i've been used to the iphone. is this a software or hardware issue?

Precisely, it's not a software nor hardware issue. This is by design. And guess what, the same mechanism is used on iPhones to seem to open apps quickly : after an app is closed, a screen copy of the way it looked at this moment is saved, and is used for the next opening as a "splash screen". In fact, this is reserved to the Apple apps, especially Maps, Contacts and Mail. So when the app displays without being really loaded, you can see about what it will look like, instead of a boring real "splash screen". This technic, of course, is only useful if the app loading isn't too long, which is the case on an iPhone.

I was on a flight yesterday and the 2 people next to me were using their iPhones when we landed. One of them was opening the Contacts application and it took like forever (about 5-6 secs!) before anything to show up on screen. The other fella was navigating through the screens, which was snappy but when he clicked on an app, the app opened almost immediately, but it took another 3-4 secs before the rest of the screen appeared. So, by far, I think the X1 is already performing quite well or faster even.

The TOPIC is fake!.. Or is it? Anyway, I think the panels load up pretty quick. What you have to keep in mind is that if you have much information for display on the screen, there will be a longer load-time. Also the ammount or RAM used by running (but minimized) programs does make a difference. If you take the first panel (in the left top corner) for example. It is the one you see when you boot up your phone. That doesn't have a "fake" picture when loading it. The screen simply fades to black and then the panel "emerge" from the black. Very good looking effect in my opinion. The Google panel is not slow either. You also have to keep in mind that the Start menu, battery indicator and so on, is coming to display in an animated way. That also takes time, and that might be subtracted from the panel's loading time. Sure, that animation might be a cover for some extra loading time, but I don't think it is.

I think we're all saying is that it isn't fake. It is the way programs are designed to load and has been like this for as long as I know. There will be parts that are I/O or event bound that will take more time to load than those which are not I/O or event bound. In a properly multithreaded environment, the difference may be less apparent given sufficient processing resources (CPU, RAM, bandwidth), and whether the program is multithreaded or not. I guess we can debate on whether putting in a dummy status before the actual one shows is considered faking or not. Would you rather be staring at a blank screen? Same goes for animations. Do animations take away processing resources from the actual loading? Yes some, but it may not be significant enough to make an impact on the overall loading. These are actually usablity design tactics that are very commonly used to "help" users wait while the program is loading or doing something in the background before a useful program state is available.

Please do not forget that the pannels are a shell over the WM 6.1. You can not compare it to Apple their own operating system. Also in other brands it takes a while to load programs. You should see how long it takes for an Adobe programs to load on my Dual Pentium desktop! In advertisement we are always fooled. But what I have seen on video's of the released model on YouTube it looks more that ok for me! Last edited by woevanda : 10-26-2008 at 02:42 PM.
