Default video playback.

Well I decided to test how far I could push the device's video playback so I took a DVDrip obtained from questionable sources and played it back using coreplayer. The details of the .avi file are as follows:
720x480, 24fps, 107kbps bit rate, 96kbps mp3 audio, and divx encoded.

After setting the buffer limit higher and putting the player into microdrive mode (b/c it has a lot of mem!) the file played rather well (VERY smooth) but stuttered during very fast scenes, car chases, explosions etc. I ran a benchmark an got ~90% (what ever that means as I don't know what that refers to). Overall I'm pleased with video playback on this device.

there's an option in coreplayer to put the player into a mode that greatly increases the buffering capacity using more ram, not sure how exactly it works, but all i know is, that for large files like this one, it helps and the xperia can handle it. There was still over %50 ram left after doing this.

The first bit rate you refer to in your first post, the 107kbps bit rate, is that correct? I would expect a higher bit rate when viewing 720x480. Still, amazing results, I would have never dreamed of being able to play .avi files and yet, You (your X1) makes it all happen ^^.

Btw, could you check if a lower resolution/higher sound quality performs similar? Most of my video files are in that kind of format. Most of them have 640x320 or similar resolutions, though the sound quality would be a bit higher then it was on the file you tested (like 192kpbs MP3).

Not to sound negative but I do not see why people are getting so excited (here and mentioned in other videos) over the abilities of the X1's video playback. The HP iPaq 4700 was very good at video also, allowing you to play those 700MB xvid/divx files using Coreplayer also without any stuttering. The X1 is much more powerful and should definitely play similar files without problems.

I've found that the x1 will play large trailers off apple.com/trailers without a hitch and play 480p trailers perfectly most of the time with occasional jerkiness. I've dropped 700MB xvids onto the x1 and it's played them fine which is great. This is all with coreplayer of course, WMP sucks and doesn't play the included Bond trailer very well and that is low res!

Coreplayer ftw!

Trailers on QT are typically around 1400 kbps for video and audio so that should give you a good idea of it's capabilities.

I didn't know that either, hence the excitement probably. The fact that i won't have to convert every video file to .mp4 before being able to view it on the go just puts a smile on my face Furthermore, i think the excitement in video's is primarily because of (supposed, i don't know for myself) crispness and smoothness, for I have yet to see an .avi file played on the xperia

I must be missing something --- I don't get at all the same results as you guys do. I have tried playing the rather lowres (480x260) James Bond clip that comes with the phone. However, the native player seems to be dropping frames, and I don't get very good results with coreplayer (version 1.2.5 build 4506) either: I set Menu->Options->Repeat to off, and then run the James Bond clip in full screen mode. Afterwards, I get into menu->Media Properties where you can get information about the playback performance of the clip:

Played frames: 2696
Dropped: 140
Played FPS: 22.815

Thus, a staggering 5% of the frames were dropped! That is not very good in my opinion. especially since the clip is only 24 frames per second, which should be easier than a 30 fps clip. I ran the test a few times, with slightly different results, but I never got less than 133 frames dropped.

Even worse, even if you don't go fullscreen, the player will still drops frames!

Played frames: 2608
Dropped: 228
Played FPS: 22.071

And what is really more interesting --- the results actually get WORSE when we don't do fullscreen. Does anyone get better results for the James Bond clip with coreplayer? Perhaps with some other settings? I really hope so --- it would be sad if this was the best the machine could do.

Apparently, HW video acceleration has only been enabled in Wmplayer and the media panel as discussed in an XDA topic, but coreplayer is "working hard" to find a way to utilize the HW acceleration on the X1. Once (if) this happens we can expect to see much better performance. Until then my only suggestion is to experiment with various encoding settings and see which works best for you. From my experience, virtualdub helps.
