yep, help needed here too. problem with the X1(i) is that wifi/wlan works (tested), but the signal is very weak. I have to put it right next to the routers on campus for it to work. i mean whats the point of wifi if you can't use it?? are there any connection boosters/new ROMs/etc?

Not had any issues with wifi signal strength here. Fine in my house (at least as good as my gf's Sony Vaio laptop) and when the phone first arrived I forgot to deactivate the wifi before driving to work and it was picking up WLANs all over the place. Not that that will help you of course, but short of carrying around a wireless repeater I don't know what you could do to improve things - there's nowhere to plug in an external aerial for instance.

You will not get the best signal strength by putting it next to the router/access point. Not that this should affect too much, but that's the way it is. You can also edit the usage of Wi-Fi from performance to energy saving mode. Try that and you might get better signal. There could also be an issue with the router you have, try locating another one and try on that one. One network might not behave as another. I've also heard that there will be a update coming week 47 or 48. Nothing is 100% sure, but that's what I've heard.
