Default Got to play with an X1 for about two hours

I have a friend who works at SE, and I got a chance to play with it for a while. Very nice to hold. The size is great. It is about as tall as my mogul but slimmer. Makes it look very sleek. The screen looks great. Installed OM 8.65 and also tried 9.405 beta. The OM 9 beta worked, but sometimes the screen would mess up because it is not made for the WVGA screen. Still, it displayed pages very well. Showed how nice browsing will be though. Readable pages in full width! Still, there is much work left to do. He said August is what they are saying now.

Hiya people I'm new here,

What I'm most anxious about is the QWERTY, does it work like it should or does the edge curved design block the top buttons? And is the 65K colors noticable compared to say, dare I say it here :P, an iPhone?

I had some contact with SE support, and they are telling me: there will be a Fastport-connector on the X1, despite of what you might have seen on prototypes and pictures.

cheers

Would it fit in a jeans pocket or would you need a pouch/holster for it?

I guess that depends on how tight your jeans are. I pocket my mogul, but then again I wear baggy jeans. It is just as tall as the mogul, about as thick, but slimmer. I think it is the tall-ness and thick-ness that affect pocket-ability. I would say that it is no more pocket-able than the mogul is. Maybe a little easier but not much.

Welcome to the forums! I did not find that the top row of buttons gave me any trouble. The tactile feedback on the buttons was not great, but it was a very early hardware revision (the one I played with said 3.0mp on the back). It should be much improved on the final. Another very interesting thing though was the camera button. It was like a real camera button. Push down to the first level to autofocus, push down harder to take a picture. Also, it did have touch focus where you tap on the screen to move the cursor to the place you want to focus on.

Don't be fooled by the numbers into thinking the screen is any less brilliant than any other. The difference in picture quality is minimal and not noticable. If you want an example, turn your PC monitor screen down to 16bit color. There actually was an iphone in the room (there must have been so much $$ in phones in the room that day ) and while I didnt compare, if I did they would look just as good, save for the better screen resolution on the X1. The X1 screen is gorgeous.

What is the fastport connector? The pictures all show it having a regular mini USB connector. One of the things that I was very happy to see was that it did not have regular mini usb, it had the HTC 11 pin extended usb. Even better. ExtUSB accepts regular mini usb plugs for charging and sync, but also accepts extended miniusb plugs that also do stereo out + mic and answer button. I would love it it stayed like this, because it makes for easy car mount use. Just dock it to charge and play music. No need to plug in multiple plugs. Then add the 3.5mm headphone for when on the go and you want to plug in regular headphones. I love the ext USB on the mogul for docking reasons, but I was at a party once and a friend took out his iphone and plugged it into a 3.5mm aux jack on the reciever and played music; the 8gb of music on my mogul could do nothing without an adapter. 3.5mm + extUSB is the best of both worlds. Like I said, the one I played with was an early hardware revision. The ones at CTIA look like they have regular mini USB, not extUSB. I hope they use extUSB though.

Hi,

I'm also new to this forum. I can't wait for the Xperia to arrive here in Holland....It will still take some time i think. We haven't got the iPhone yet either.......

That's same with my SE K800i

The only thing i'm worried about is the touchscreen....How usable is it?

When you ask how usable it is, how do you mean? Have you used a windows mobile device before? You can expect the same usability of any other windows mobile device. WM is typically designed for stylus use, not finger, but it continues to make improvements toward finger-friendliness. Also, third party programs are always out there to improve the WM interface drastically. I wouldn't like WM the way it is out of the box, but third party software makes it so much better.

Fast-port is SE's standard connector for its accessoires say a handy dandy headset (HPM-90) with remote and 3.5mm plug ofr my KSC35's. With all the travelling around it isn't handy to get out the thing every time someone calls. Just leave it there and listen to your music, AND pick up the phone. But of course there are also extUSB alternatives for that as you mentioned. Good thing SE doesn't fall behind on the iPhone, let's wait and see with the iPhone 3G! Only thing itching is the high price without having say 8GB internal + microSD. Other than that, it's a solid product!

Hmm. But would they really adapt fast-port to be able to do activesync over usb? Thats a lot of pointless R&D when the MSM chipset probably natively supports mini usb interface, and htc is a pro at the extUSB. I know sony is known for being proprietary, but they dropped their stupid memory schtick for this one. I think they will stay with USB. Worst case scenario I think is they use regular mini USB for charge and sync. Best case scenario they use extUSB that does charge, sync, stereo out and mic.

When you were playing with the device how did you find the sensitivy touch screen to finger touch. I've watched a number of demonstration videos to try to get an idea but it's hard to tell from a video. I've noticed a few videos where people are pressing the buttons on the touch screen with the flat part of their thumb, something that doesn't work good with my current HTC device.

Also is it a transflective screen, the screen looks beautiful but I'm wondering how it would display in direct sunlight, again compared to my HTC which is not very viewable on a sunny day.
