Default The Gizmodo Review

As some of you may have read (as it is currently a top news article on the inxperia homepage), this is what Gizmodo had to say, in conclusion to their review, about the Xperia...

"To be blunt, the Xperia X1 isn’t quite up to snuff with the top smartphones in the market from an overall standpoint. This is not to say the Xperia X1 is a bad phone—on the contrary, it’s a very respectable piece of hardware. It’s just not good enough to justify the cost when better, cheaper phones are available."

Now, this made me wonder... What "top smartphones" are they referring to, when they say the Xperia isnt "quite up to snuff with the top smartphones in the market"? And also, which phones could they be referring to when they say "when better, cheaper phones are available"? I guess im just curious as to which phones they would consider the "top smartphones" in the market, and which phones they consider to be "better"... Anybody care to give their opinion on what phones they think they could be referring to here?

If you do what most people do and just compare the numbers such as megapixels, processor speed, memory, etc. then it is easy to say which is "tops"

When you factor in the "real-world" aspects such as: user-experience, intuitiveness, practicaly implemented features, broad feature set, etc. then the Gizmodo statement is not unreasonable.

And it should go without saying, every single touchscreen phone called a smartphone will be compared to iPhone. iPhone is the standard bearer of smartphones whether everyone agrees with it being a smartphone or not. They probably are not just refering solely to the iPhone. Most likely they are talking about the other HTC models, Blackberries, Samsungs and etc.

So WhyBe, which phones would you consider to be the top smartphones, that they are referring to?

As far as blackberries go, i tested the new storm at a local verizon store in my area and honestly, i just wasnt impressed at all... Out of curiousity, what is it that the top blackberry phones have that the xperia doesnt?

Also, what do the top HTC phones have that xperia doesnt?

Honest questions, anybody have any answers?

Like I said, chances are they are comparing it to iPhone. I haven't had experience with the newer Blackberries.

But, also like I said, if you just want to do a feature shootout, the X1 will top alot, if not all, of phones. Add user-experience into the equation, then the feature list doesn't mean as much--making the way for "less-featured" phones to be "top smartphone" (iPhone). User-experience is what sells the iPhone, not it's megapixels or feature-this or feature-that. X1 has tons of great features, but, I wouldn't say it has the best user-experience at the moment. Even Microsoft is addressing this in WM6.5 and WM7.

i don't really get it why people call iPhone a smartphone.. in my point of view it is just a normal phone.. only with fast internet capabilities instead of wap.. and that's it really.. i may not know anything about it but as faw as i am concerned it is just a normal phone.. just the first finger touch screen phone.. a touch screen phone doesn't mean it is a smartphone..

anyway.. i think gizmodo was referring to HTCs omnia and blackberrys..

Roygbeat - Im not big on the iphone either, but it DOES have pretty much all of the same features as a smartphone does (other than the fact that its not WinMo) so technically i guess it could be a smartphone... I mean what do other "smartphones" have that better-qualify them to be considered a smartphone than the iphone does?

Anyway, other than the xperia im considering a few other phones... If anybody can reply with their opinions of each phone, and even which one they think is best, please do.

Omnia ] ____(or are those the same? im not sure)
Behold ]

Fuze, or Touch Pro (which one is better by the way? differences?)

@xperia_rx
I think Fuze and Touch Pro are the same phone. TouchPro is unbranded/unlocked.

@roygbeat
It is an excercise in futility trying to disqualify the iPhone as a smartphone--no matter how technically correct one may be--because not only does the market consider it to be a smartphone, but unfortunately, they consider it to be "the top smartphone" (see the reasons I stated above).

A smartphone that can not edit Doc, Xls...etc.
No A2DP (matter of fact, can't not do any bluetooth functions besides "hands free"), No copy and paste, No turn by turn GPS, Does not have a real video cam, etc etc.
It's just an iPod with phone functions. IMO.
So much "work around" needed just to do anything....."It just works"......righhhhhtttt.

Gizmodo=Apple/iPhone fan boys.

I wouldn't take their review to heart, just buy whichever phone suite your need the best and be happy with it. If you are the type who worries about what other say about your gadgets and stuff, iPhone would be the way to go.

Edit: BTW, my 4 years+ old pocketPC2003 can do Doc, Xls, video, A2DP and much much more Out of the box. Who woulda thought, right?
