XPERIA X1a Now Available for Pre-order

Ok US folks, true to their word, Sony Stlye is now showing the XPERIA X1 (X1a) now available for pre-order. It is interesting however that only the silver model is available. It’s $799.99 with free shipping and is indicated that the in will be available “on or about 11/21/2008″ which is a week early from “Black Friday” — I guess to give leeway for shipping.

Others have also reported that J&R is also listing the XPERIA X1a (also silver only) available for pre-order. Best Buy is also now listing the XPERIA X1a - Silver for pre-order.

If you find other online stores listing the XPERIA X1a, provide a link in the comments so we can add it to the article.

XPERIA Panels Developer Competition Coming

We’ve seen the enhanced Sony Ericsson Panels page. We’ve heard about the update to the XPERIA Windows Mobile 6.1 SDK. We’ve heard about Spb creating a Panel version of their app. Put them all together and it seems like the recent XPERIA news has been all about Panels and developers.

Well, more good news to developers. You might want to start sharpening your Panels development skills since rumor has it that come November 14, Sony Ericsson is launching a Panels developer competition. According to David Cushman:

Now Sony-Ericsson’s X1 is entering the fray with a competition for individual developers - and it’s one that’ll showcase your work and land the winner an X1 of their own (worth a fare chunk of cash in itself). If you’re one such, here’s an early heads-up. The site hosting the competition doesn’t go live until November 14. But take it from me, it’s coming (I know, because the company I work for is building it right now!).

This is actually great news for everyone. While developers slug it out to create the best Panels, consumers will have more Panels to choose from.

XPERIA X1 to Ship in Q4

There is still no exact date but Daniel Ljunggren, Sony Ericsson head of XPERIA product management, showed some slides at the company’s Capital Markets Day mentioning that the XPERIA X1 is coming out Q4 2008. This is at least a more official statement than the one we got from Handango. Lets just hope that Q4 means October and not December.

In the presentation, one slide mentions one of the two X1 models, the X1a. Another slide defines the Panels philosophy:

X1 Speed Improvements, XPERIA Line could Run Other OSes

I wasn’t lucky enough to get invited to Mobius this year but my good friend Judie of Gear Diary is at Seattle and has just put up her Mobius Day 1 report. Yup, they have been treated with a demo of the XPERIA X1. Check out what she has to say:

He gave us demos of the interface and most of the issues we had seen with lagging screens (mainly from Mobile World Congress reports) seem to have been resolved. They said it at the time, that this was not a finished device and that it was a work in progress, so it is great to see that progress is indeed being made.We tried to pin him down on a date for the release, but second half of the year was as specific as he would get. We did find out that the name XPERIA does not specifically mean Windows Mobile devices, it could be other mobile OSes; but all Windows Mobile Sony Ericsson products will be XPERIAs.

I was able to catch the first day of CTIA Wireless 2008 at Las Vegas. Udupi Bhat, Sony Ericsson Business Strategic Planner was doing most of the demo of the XPERIA X1. He was doing the standard demo, showing the panels, the curve, touch navigation, and other features. Aside from a pair of X1s in each of the secured XPERIA X1 cylindrical display cases, there was only one X1 on the floor being shown. Sony Ericsson was a bit kinder this time, maybe due to Microsoft officially launching Windows Mobile 6.1, allowing people to briefly touch and play with the X1.

I did get to find out that the 1700 Mhz was officially dropped for cost reasons. TrackID is also will not be on the device by default although this will be left for third party developers to add such an app.

Some thoughts. I love the XPERIA X1 size! It’s actually smaller than how it looks in pictures. I tried to take a lot of pics of the X1 on hand to hopefully give everyone an idea of how perfect the size is.

Enjoy the 16 pics after the jump.
